Sig Offers 4 1911’s in .357 Sig

January 17th, 2012 No comments

Sig Sauer slipped a few surprises in the bag for SHOT Show this year. We have already known for over a month about the majority of new models but today we found out that Sig is releasing 4 1911’s chambered in .357 Sig.

The four models being released are below. The part numbers are NOT confirmed yet but speculated below.

  • 1911 Traditional Tacops .357 Sig (part number: 1911TR-357-TACOPS)
  • 1911 Traditional Carry Stainless .357 Sig (part number: 1911TCO-357-SSS)
  • 1911 Fastback Nightmare .357 Sig (part number: 1911F-357-NMR)
  • 1911 Reverse Two Tone .357 Sig (part number: 1911-357-RTSS)

Later today I’ll try to post photos and additional details here. Part numbers will also be confirmed / updated. Availability and ship dates have not been confirmed – to date we have yet to see a .40 or 9mm 1911 even though they were released last year at SHOT Show. Hopefully we don’t have to wait a full year+ for these!

Update 1-18-2012 – the Tacops and Stainless (Carry) are both Traditional models. That info was not initially provided to me. Info above fixed.

Official Sig Sauer Press Release:

EXETER, NH (January 2012) —SIG SAUER Team Captain Max Michel, Jr., has brought his winning ways and experience to work with SIG engineers in the development of the 1911 Max, a race-inspired pistol built to his unique specifications.

Built by the SIG SAUER Custom Shop, the 1911 Max is a single-stack, 5′′ all-steel pistol with all the custom features that a world-class shooter requires.

“We’re proud to be associated with a competitor of Max’s skill and character,” Bud Fini, Vice President of Marketing. “He also brings years of elite-level match experience, which is incorporated in this pistol.”

A Nitron-finished stainless slide features forward cocking serrations, on top of a natural stainless frame with 26LPI checkering on the front strap. Max’s “MM” logo is laser-engraved on the slide and machined into the Hogue® custom G-10 “Chainlink” grips, which offer a very aggressive, non-slip surface to the shooter.

“I’m pretty particular about what goes into my guns,” Michel said. “In my world, a broken part or a malfunction could end my shot at a world title. I wouldn’t put my name on a gun unless I was certain it would measure up to my standards.”

Built to Michel’s specifications, the 1911 Max has a host of custom features, including SIG SAUER flat trigger, external extractor, a Dawson® Ice Magwell®, a Koenig® Speed Hammer® and EGW® sear and firing pin. Fiber optic front and adjustable rear sights also provide high-speed visibility. The 1911 Max will be available in .45ACP and .40S&W.

Sig Sauer’s New Short Barrel Rifles

Below is information on Sig Sauer’s various new short barrel rifles (SBR). Short barrel rifles are NFA restricted and must transferred through a class 3 dealer. These rifles are not legal in all states.

The photos below come from Sig Sauer. Some are watermarked to prevent hot-linking.

SIG SAUER® Launches Factory Short-Barreled Rifle Program

Manufacturer-tuned SBRs offer increased reliability, function

EXETER, NH (January 2012) — To meet the increasing interest in short-barreled rifles, SIG SAUER has introduced a line of factory-built SBRs for the consumer market.

“Interest in short-barreled rifles has never been greater,” said Jeff Creamer, SIG SAUER Director of Product Management. “What used to be primarily a military or law enforcement configuration is now being sought by the consumer market.”

As barrel and gas system length is reduced, reliable function can be compromised. Purchasing a factory- built SBR designed from the ground up and fine-tuned to be a short-barreled system greatly increases reliability and function.

SIG SAUER has previously offered complete short-barreled upper receivers for their SIG516® rifles, but this is the first time complete rifles are to be offered in SBR configurations.

Preferred by entry teams and CQB specialists for greater maneuverability in tight places, SBRs deliver significant ballistic performance over pistol-caliber weapons. With the growth of the suppressor market, SBRs have also seen increased interest from those who want a suppressed rifle without introducing additional length.

The Factory SBR Program will offer shortened variants of all SIG SAUER semi-automatic rifles, from the .22LR SIG522TM to the 7.62 NATO SIG716®. Each platform will have a SBR-tuned gas system to ensure maximum performance and reliability.

SBRs are available in Classic, Patrol and SWAT configurations, giving the user a wide variety of options. All NFA rules do apply; so please see your Class III firearms dealer for ordering information.

P938 Press Release:

SIG SAUER® P938TM Packs 9mm Power Into P238®-sized Platform

The company’s smallest 9mm ever is based on one of its best-selling pistols

EXETER, NH (January 2012) — With the introduction of the P938, SIG SAUER now offers the ballistic advantage of the 9mm cartridge in a platform similar in size to the best-selling P238 pistol.

A single-action-only trigger, coupled with full-size SIGLITE® Night Sights makes the P938 handle like a much larger pistol, yet is still easy to carry concealed.

“As soon as the P238 was introduced, we began to see demand for a 9mm version,” said Ron Cohen, SIG SAUER President and Chief Executive Officer. “We wanted to maintain the P238 accuracy and reliability, while providing the extra punch of the larger caliber.”

With dimensions just slightly larger than its .380ACP counterpart, the P938 packs six plus one rounds of 9mm into an all-metal frame. The cocked-and-locked single-action trigger gives the P938 unmatched accuracy in a pistol its size.

Fans of the 1911 will find the thumb safety, magazine release and slide stop lever in familiar places. An ambidextrous safety makes the P938 easy for left- and right-handed shooters. An extended seven-round magazine will be available separately.

The most compact 9mm in the SIG SAUER product line, the P938 will be available in five configurations.

  • Rosewood: Features a Nitron®-coated stainless steel slide over a dark hard anodized alloy frame. Hogue® Rosewood Grips round out this package.
  • Blackwood: A natural stainless steel slide and black hard coat anodized alloy frame are paired with Hogue Blackwood grips.
  • Extreme: Following in the footsteps of other Extreme models, this P938 has a Nitron-coated stainless slide and black anodized frame. Hogue G-10 Piranha grips in black and grey provide maximum grip and a distinctive look.
  • SAS: The SIG Anti-Snag treatment removes all sharp edges and corners on the slide and frame. A natural stainless steel slide contrasts with the black hard coat anodized alloy frame and the stippled walnut grips.
  • Equinox: A polished Nitron two-tone slide is paired with a black hard coat anodized frame. Tru-Glo® front and SIGLITE rear sights and Hogue black Diamondwood grips complete this package.

Adaptive Carbine Platform

Adaptive Carbine Platform for Pistols

Sig Sauer has been rolling out a lot of new handguns and rifles for 2012 but they’re releasing some great new accessories too.

The Advaptive Carbine Platform (ACP for short), is a set up to accept about any railed pistol.

Adaptive Carbine Platform Standard

Adaptive Carbine Platform Enhanced

LE Adaptive Carbine Platform

See Sig’s video describing the Adaptive Carbine Platform:

Below is Sig Sauer’s full press release for the Adaptive Carbine Platform:

SIG SAUER® Adaptive Carbine Platform Extends Pistol Utility

Universal platform mounts to handguns with an accessory rail

EXETER, NH (January 2012) —The SIG SAUER Adaptive Carbine Platform (ACP) allows any handgun with an accessory rail to be quickly modified into a personal defense weapon or submachine gun-style firearm. Regardless of the brand, most pistols equipped with an accessory rail can be mounted to the ACP without the need for modification to the base gun.

Fabricated from solid aircraft-grade aluminum, the ACP sports M1913 rails at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with a full-length top rail at the 12 o’clock position. Compatible accessories such as lights, red dot sights and lasers can be mounted for additional functionality.

“The ACP brings Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) features to almost any handgun,” said Bud Fini, SIG SAUER Vice President of Marketing. “For law enforcement or executive protection details looking for the quick deployment of a submachine gun, but with the controllability of a handgun, the ACP offers everything in one package.”

An integral hand stop permits the user to get a forward grip without the danger of covering the muzzle. The integral quick-detachable sling mounts allow an ACP-equipped pistol to be carried on a sling for fast access.

The new SIG SAUER ACP allows the shooter access to the pistol’s frame mounted controls, providing an easy training transition and familiar manual of arms. The ACP is also compatible with most sound suppressors.

The ACP is available in three models:

  • ACP – This basic model allows for fast, easy conversion and works with most railed pistols.
  • ACP-Enhanced – The Enhanced version includes the new SIG SAUER MIL-GRADE Mini Red Dot Sight, a quick detachable sling swivel and a Single Point Bungee Sling.
  • ACP-LE – This National Firearms Act-regulated military/law enforcement model features a top- folding shoulder stock. Civilian purchasers must comply with the requirements for registering a short-barreled rifle.

Update 1-13-2012

There are two more versions of the Adaptive Carbine Platform – the ACP-CPL and ACP-ZK.

The ACP-CPL is the Adaptive Carbine Platform with single point bungee sling and compact pistol laser (Sig’s CPL-RM-R). MSRP on the ACP-CPL is $479

The CPL-ZK, aka, Zombie Killer, is the Adaptive Carbine Platform with the compact pistol laser mentioned just above, single point bungee sling, and Zombie Killer hard sided zipper case. MSRP is not available but I estimate it at about $539.

Sig P938 Specs

January 7th, 2012 23 comments

We’ve got the specs for Sig Sauer’s P938 sub compact 9mm pistol available. The table below shows both the P938 and P238 specs for comparison

P238 P938
Caliber .380 ACP 9mm
Action Type SAO SAO
Trigger Pull 7.5 – 8.5 lbs 5 LB (could be incorrect – probably more like 7.5 lb)
Length 5.5″ 5.9″
Height 3.9″ 3.9″
Width 1.1″ 1.1″
Barrel Length 2.7″ 3.0″
Sight Radius 3.8″ 4.0″
Weight w/ empty mag 15.2 oz (Alloy)

18.0 oz (Stainless)

16.0 oz
Sights Contrast or Night Sights Night Sights
Frame material Alloy or Stainless Alloy
Frame finish Black Hard Coat Anodized or Stainless Black Hard Coat Anodized
Slide Material Stainless Stainless
Slide Finish Nitron or Stainless Nitron or Stainless
Other Ambi-Safety Beavertail, Ambi-Safety

The most important thing to take away from this chart is that the overall dimensions and weight on the P938 are almost identical to that of the P238. It is just .4″ longer overall and weighs just 8/10ths of an ounce more than a regular alloy frame P238.

The P938 will have an extended length 7rd magazine that will be very similar to the P238 7rd magazine.

P938 vs Kimber Solo – Specs

Below is a comparison of the P938 specs versus the Kimber Solo, one of the most desirable concealed carry pistols on the market today. One of the big differences of the P938 versus the Solo is that it is single action only and has a thumb safety. The trigger pull is also 2 pounds lighter.

P938 Kibmer Solo
Caliber 9mm 9mm
Action Type SAO Single Action Striker- Fired
Trigger Pull 5 LB 7 LB
Length 5.9″ 5.5″
Height 3.9″ 3.9″
Width 1.1″ .995″
Barrel Length 3.0″ 2.7″
Sight Radius 4.0″ 4.4″
Weight w/ empty mag 16.0 oz 17.0 oz
Sights Night Sights Fixed 3-dot white or Night Sights (Solo CDP)
Frame material Alloy Aluminum
Frame finish Black Hard Coat Anodized KimPro II
Slide Material Stainless Stainless
Slide Finish Nitron or Stainless Satin Silver Color
Safety/mag release Ambi-Safety Ambi-Safety, Ambi-Mag Release
MSRP $795 – $838 $725- $1223

The main thing to take away from the comparison between the P938 and Solo is that the P938 is just a little bigger but for the features offered, the P938 offers more bang for the buck. Nearly all the P938 models price right in with the lower two Solo models. The trigger on the P938 is lighter, and the 938.

Finally, I’ve heard that the P938 won’t be anywhere near as picky about the type of ammo you use. The Solo requires at least a 124gr bullet and Kimber has a published list of recommended ammo types. I don’t think that this will be necessary for the Sig. Given the height of the new Sig, the extended length 7rd P937 magazine should be pretty high in demand.

Update 1-8-12 – the above Sig specs came from the 2012 catalog. It appears that there is a typo for the P238 trigger pull weight in the catalog as it indicates a 5lb trigger pull – unless the trigger has been lightened. The Sig Sauer website shows the trigger pull at 7.5 – 8.5 lbs for the P238 so one would expect the pull on the P938 to be the same. I’ll try to bring a Lyman trigger pull gauge to SHOT and put one of the 938’s to the test myself.

Update 1-9-12 9:20 AM – The P938 may have an ambi-safety. I was unable to determine from the specs and a commenter pointed out that previous indicators suggested that it did. I’ll try to clarify ASAP and make updates.

Update 1-9-12 9:22 AM – I’ve confirmed that the p938 will have an ambi-safety and have updated the above specs accordingly.

Update 1-16-12 – I just received word that the  P938 will support the same trigger guard laser as the P238 (238-TGL). It seems logical that the Crimson Trace LG-492 will work on the 938 too.
